SIOEN INDUSTRIES : Fire at EMB

About 11 o'clock this morning, a fire started in the EMB premises at Bornem. EMB is a subsidiary company of Sioen Industries, specializing in the production of pigment pastes and granulates.

The fire broke out after an explosion in one of the presses used for the production of pigment pastes. The fire brigade arrived very quickly on the scene and the fire doors and the compartmentalization in the buildings also functioned excellently, as a result of which damage was principally limited to the roof. The pastes produced by EMB are used in the coating process.

Nevertheless, this activity is not compromised at Sioen, on the one hand thanks to the stocks in the different coating divisions and on the other hand by increasing the production in the Inducolor department. This company was taken over by Sioen Industries in 2001 and produces pigment pastes according to the same process as used by EMB. So, the temporary standstill of the EMB presses can be set off by Inducolor.

Smoke and water damage to the roof of the EMB premises are substantial.

Nevertheless, Pascale Sioen, CEO of EMB and Inducolor, hopes to restart the production of pigment pastes very soon. 'We are sure that the cleaning up and the repair of the premises and the machines will go well so that we can restart the production very soon, i.e. within a couple of days. The production line of granulates, in the same building, and the varnishing line in the outbuilding have not been damaged by the fire and will be restarted immediately.'
